THE ATOM CODE OF CONDUCT
Class Etiquette
The Atom classes are designed to encourage playfulness and discovery. To ensure a supportive and safe environment for all students, in some cases, we have a strike system, depending on the severity of the complaint or incident, it is, however, at The Atom’s direction as to who may be excluded. To avoid issues, we ask everyone to follow a few simple guidelines:
Be kind, mindful, and respectful to everyone in class. Aim to punch up comedically.
Respect personal space and contact. Always assume that others prefer not to be touched unless clear consent is given.
Support your classmates both on and off stage.
If you're more talkative, make space for others to contribute.
If you're quieter, know that your voice matters—we welcome your participation, but you're also free to observe.
Respect confidentiality. If someone shares something personal, you may reflect on the learning, but do not share their story.
Please do not bring pets to class.
Refrain from running or engaging in behaviour that could endanger yourself or others.
Only registered participants (or those approved to swap into the session) may attend the class.
If something makes you uncomfortable during class, please feel free to raise it. You can do this in the moment, during a break, or by contacting your teacher between sessions.
If you'd rather not speak to your teacher directly, you can reach out to our Student Liaison, Becky Webb:
Standards of Conduct
Improv naturally explores social boundaries, and ideas or performances may occasionally feel challenging. At The Atom, we value open-mindedness and encourage creative freedom. However, we expect students to avoid conduct that is abusive or personally targeted.
We do not aim to police all interpersonal dynamics, but will take action if behaviour clearly crosses the line. If you experience or witness inappropriate conduct, please speak with your teacher or contact the Student Liaison.
There will be no retaliation for raising a concern, reporting an incident, or participating in an investigation. Retaliation should be reported immediately.
Anti-Harassment Policy
Harassment of any kind is not tolerated. This includes but is not limited to:
Verbal, physical, or visual conduct that creates a hostile or intimidating environment.
Slurs, derogatory jokes, or threats based on personal characteristics.
Inappropriate or abusive behaviour that is not aligned with class content or objectives.
Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment, in any form, is strictly prohibited. This includes:
Unwanted touching, persistent advances, or sexual remarks.
Any conduct where submission or rejection affects academic or professional opportunities.
Sexual jokes or innuendos used outside of a clear artistic or educational context.
Expression in performance is not automatically considered harassment. However, targeted or abusive behaviour without artistic justification is unacceptable.
Romantic Relationships
Improvisation often brings people together socially, and consensual relationships may form. The Atom does not prohibit relationships between students and performers but expects them not to affect classroom and team dynamics.
Faculty may not engage in romantic or sexual relationships with current students. Once someone completes all courses, relationships are permitted, but if that person continues to perform with The Atom, it must be disclosed to senior members to ensure transparency and impartiality, particularly in matters involving casting or employment.
Complaint Procedure
If you experience or witness harassment of any kind, whether from a student or faculty member:
Report the issue to the Student Liaison.
You may request the liaison speak informally to the other party, or initiate a formal complaint.
No one at The Atom may retaliate against you for raising a concern.
Complaints will be handled confidentially to the extent possible and investigated promptly. Informal resolutions may be pursued where appropriate, but more serious cases may require disciplinary action.
Sexual Assault Policy
Sexual assault is a criminal act and a serious violation of The Atom’s standards. It includes:
Any non-consensual touching or fondling of genitals, breasts, thighs, or buttocks.
Forced or coerced sexual contact.
Non-consensual sexual penetration of any kind.
If you experience or witness sexual assault:
Report the incident to the Student Liaison.
You are encouraged to contact the police and seek medical attention.
Reports will be treated with confidentiality and investigated thoroughly. Disciplinary action may be taken even if the victim chooses not to participate in the process.
Violence Policy
The Atom maintains a zero-tolerance policy for violence. Prohibited actions include:
Physical assault or threats.
Harassing messages or behaviour.
Bringing weapons to class.
Stalking or intimidation.
Report any violent behaviour to the Student Liaison.
(This policy excludes simulated violence in the context of performance.)
Drug and Alcohol Policy
The use, possession, sale, or distribution of illegal or unauthorised drugs or alcohol is prohibited during Atom class activities or on the premises.
Violation of this policy may result in expulsion and/or criminal referral.
Confidentiality
You may report concerns confidentially or anonymously. The Atom will investigate discreetly and protect your privacy as much as possible.
Open Door Policy
We’re committed to fostering a safe, open, and supportive learning space. If you have any issues or suggestions, please contact the Student Liaison. Your concerns will be handled confidentially unless broader action is required.
